压电响应不仅取决于电场能够诱导多大的极化和晶格形变，也取决于这些变化能否及时跟随外场。本征电偶极具有较快的响应动力学，但在中等电场下，可逆极化调制及晶格位移的幅度通常有限。离子缺陷跨越多个晶胞重新分布，可以建立较大的缺陷极化和晶格形变，却受到较高迁移能垒的制约，响应会随工作频率升高而显著衰减。两类机制由此形成响应幅值与工作频率之间的明显权衡，即“快而小”与“大而慢”。
