Tank shells are stored in armored compartments. Depending on the tank, a crew member or an autoloader selects and loads the shell into the gun’s breech. Millions of shells were fired leading up to the big battles of World War 1. The empty shell casings became a logistical nightmare for the armies of #WW1. Efforts were made to ship the shells back to the factories were they could be recycled but in the fog of war some were left in the field. In a New-York Tribune Aug 31 1919 "Pile of shells cost the British government $25 each ($450 in 2025).
