Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote his final string quartets—including Quartet No. 23 in F major, K. 590, heard here—for King Friedrich Wilhelm II of Prussia, an amateur cellist. Often referred to as the “Prussian” Quartets, these works subtly elevate the cello’s role throughout, as an homage to Mozart's patron.
