In the early 1940s, women’s gyms looked very different from what we know today. These spaces focused less on strength and muscle building and more on posture, “slenderizing,” and gentle movement. Calisthenics, light weights, and mechanical devices were common, many designed to massage or vibrate the body rather than push it to exhaustion. The approach reflected the time period.
