The History of Mercury Marine Mercury Marine, founded in 1939 by Carl Kiekhaefer in Cedarburg, Wisconsin, began by reengineering 300 defective Thor outboard motors, launching the Mercury brand in 1940. Post-World War II, innovations like the Thunderbolt engine and Jet Prop exhaust set industry standards. In 1961, Mercury introduced the MerCruiser sterndrive and merged with Brunswick Corporation.
