The lesser flamingo(African flamingo) is the smallest species of flamingo, though it is a tall and large bird by most standards. The species can weigh from 2.6 to 6 lb. Most of the plumage is pinkish white. It’s International Flamingo Day and we’re seeing … gray! This year, with 19 lesser flamingo chicks, the Zoo has surpassed 400 hatchings (412 to be exact) since our conservation work with this speces began in 2002. Born a fluffy white or gray, the chicks will eventually get that characteristic pink plumage by age 3 or 4, thanks to pigments or carotenoids found in their diet.
