Opening windows in winter feels counter-intuitive, so most of us avoid it. But the air inside our homes quietly changes through the day. Cooking, showers, breathing and drying clothes all add moisture to the air. When windows stay closed, that warm, moisture-laden air has nowhere to go. Moist air actually takes more energy to heat and often feels colder and heavier, even when the thermostat says otherwise. A short burst of ventilation replaces that damp, stale air with colder, drier outdoor air.
